Exploring the Town of Esporles: Our Vacation in Mallorca

Feb 24, 2011   //   by admin   //   News  //  Comments Off

It is Saturday morning, and this is the day that Esporles has its market. The day when you get to go to visit the small, but attractive town of Esporles, with its tree-lined streets and an atmosphere that generates a tranquility and peace that is hard to find in this modern, chaotic World. In the center of the town, running parallel with the Main Street, is a widened walkway that contains a number of cafés and restaurants each with its own outside seating area all surrounded by mature plane trees, which in the summer provide shade from the gorgeous sun that beats down incessantly from the blue sky. It is in this walkway that approximately 12 stalls are set up each Saturday offering a variety of produce, clothing, and leather goods. There is the Chinese family that sells the clothes, the mother and son that has their produce stall and the young man from South America who has some of the best cheese you have ever tasted. (that is if you like the really awful smelling stuff.) These are not the only stalls that are there but the ones that we frequent. The produce is generally local and extremely tasty, much better than that sold in supermarkets and for the most part has not been drenched in chemicals and other modern camouflage.

Once you have selected and purchased all the things you need, venture to one of the sidewalk cafés and order your wine, cerveza (beer) or coffee, then sit back and enjoy the atmosphere that surrounds this Saturday morning ritual. Be under no illusions, it is crowded, not the hoards of people that you get in major cities, but significant enough that it’s sometimes difficult to find a seat and enjoy your morning beverage.

On some Saturdays a group of cyclists appear on their way to the strenuous uphill climbs of the mountains or a group of motorcyclists. Some of the motorcyclists have large throbbing Harley-Davidson’s while others drive high screeching, powerful Japanese roadsters, yet all stop to have their beverage and form part of the character of a Saturday morning in Esporles.

Don’t miss it for its part of the life of Mallorca and definitely part of your holiday.

My husband George and I have been fortunate enough to have been renting Finca de Los Podadores since last August, and sadly, we will be leaving in May, with great regret and wonderful memories.

A Visit to Our Home in Mallorca

What is it like to wake up in the morning, look out of your bedroom window and be confronted by the most gorgeous view of a pine tree covered hill side, inter disbursed with almond and olive trees. In the early spring when the almond trees are in full pink blossom, they add a color that is only found in those geographic picture books we all cherish and envy.

Immediately outside of your window is an orange orchard with endless rows of trees, which during the month of December and January are burdened with oranges and tangerines waiting to be picked, peeled and eaten. It is idyllic, it is magical and it is incredibly quiet. However, suddenly the peace and tranquility is disturbed by the hee haw of the donkeys grazing on the other side of the Palma to Esporles Road.

For the brave, the swimming pool offers a refreshing wake-up that provides a wonderful start to your holiday day. Once dried, you go and enjoy your breakfast either in the covered area just outside the kitchen or sit on the wicker couches, just below the magnificent window that provides such a panoramic view of the orchard and tree covered hillside from the entrance hall. For the energetic, a run around the orchard two or three times will give you a reasonable workout and then you can sit down, enjoy a drink and decide what it is you want to do for the day.

It doesn’t rain often in the summer, but if it does the coziness of the sitting room with its fireplace and comfortable seats offers an opportunity to read that book that somehow you never quite got around to. For children, there is the media room that they can play video games or watch, for the 20th time, the Lion King.

Testimonials

Our family stayed at this location for 10 days and could not have asked for better accommodations. From the amazing scenery to the fabulous house we had a great stay. Everyone enjoyed the pool, the walks in the orange groves and sitting outside on the patio at night enjoying the stars.
